Biography
Early life
Cillian Murphy was born on 25 May 1976 in Douglas, Cork, Ireland. His mother taught French, his father, Brendan, worked for the Department of Education, and several other relatives were teachers. He grew up in Ballintemple, Cork, with a younger brother, Páidi, and two younger sisters, Sile and Orla.
He attended Presentation Brothers College, a Catholic secondary school, where a drama module run by Pat Kiernan of the Corcadorca Theatre Company gave him his first experience of performing. In his late teens and early twenties he sang and played guitar in bands with his brother. In 1996 he began studying law at University College Cork, failed his first-year exams, and turned toward acting after watching Corcadorca's stage production of A Clockwork Orange.
Career
Murphy made his professional debut in September 1996 in Enda Walsh's play Disco Pigs, playing a volatile Cork teenager. The run was planned for three weeks but toured Europe, Canada and Australia for two years, and he left both university and his band. More stage work followed, including Much Ado About Nothing (1998) and The Country Boy and Juno and the Paycock (both 1999). He reprised his Disco Pigs role in the 2001 film version, moved from Cork to Dublin and then, in 2001, to London.
His first widely seen film role was Jim in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later (2002), which became a sleeper hit in North America. In 2003 he appeared in Intermission, alongside Colin Farrell, and had smaller parts in Cold Mountain and Girl with a Pearl Earring. In 2005 he played Dr Jonathan Crane, the villain Scarecrow, in Batman Begins, the first of many collaborations with the director Christopher Nolan. That year he also starred in Wes Craven's thriller Red Eye and in Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto, playing Patrick "Kitten" Braden. In 2006 he took the role of Damien O'Donovan in The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
Later film work included Sunshine (2007), in which he was billed first, and The Edge of Love (2008). He returned as Scarecrow in The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), played Robert Fischer in Inception (2010), and appeared in Tron: Legacy (2010), In Time (2011) and Broken (2012). On stage he starred in Love Song in London's West End in 2006 and 2007, and in 2011 he performed Walsh's one-man play Misterman, first in Galway and then in Brooklyn.
From 2013 Murphy played Tommy Shelby in the BBC series Peaky Blinders. In the same year he directed a music video for the band Money. Further films include Transcendence (2014), In the Heart of the Sea (2015), Anthropoid (2016, as Jozef Gabčík), Dunkirk (2017, as the Shivering Soldier), Anna (2019) and A Quiet Place: Part II. Since 2020 he has hosted Cillian Murphy's Limited Edition, a music radio series on BBC Radio 6 Music.
In Oppenheimer (2023) he played J. Robert Oppenheimer, his sixth film with Nolan and his first as the lead. In February 2024 he launched the production company Big Things Films with Alan Moloney. He produced and starred in Small Things Like These, in which he plays Bill Furlong and which opened the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, and he worked with Netflix on the film Steve. He is an executive producer of 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and he returned as Jim in the latter. In 2026 he reprised Tommy Shelby in the continuation film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
Recognition
For Oppenheimer, Murphy won the Academy Award for Best Actor, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. He was the first Irish-born performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. His stage work in Misterman earned him a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding One-Person Show in 2012.
Earlier nominations include a Golden Globe for Breakfast on Pluto in 2005, the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2007, a European Film Award for The Wind That Shakes the Barley in 2006, British Independent Film Awards for The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Sunshine and Broken, and an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain for Batman Begins in 2006.
Personal life
Murphy married Yvonne McGuinness in 2004; they met at one of his band's shows in 1996. The couple lived in Dublin until 2001, then in London, and moved back to Dublin in 2015. Aran Murphy is among their children.
