Synopsis

Batman Begins is a 2005 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan. It restarts the Batman story from the beginning, treating it as a crime drama in a neo-noir setting rather than a comic book spectacle, and it focuses on how an ordinary man becomes a symbol.

Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne, heir to a wealthy Gotham City family. As a boy, Bruce suffers a loss that leaves him angry and unsure of where to direct that anger. Grown up, he walks away from his comfortable life and travels abroad, drifting through the criminal underworld to understand the people his city fears. In a distant prison he meets Henri Ducard, played by Liam Neeson, who offers him a purpose and a rigorous kind of training.

When Bruce returns home, Gotham is under the grip of organised crime, headed by Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson), and corruption reaches deep into its institutions. Michael Caine plays Alfred Pennyworth, the loyal family butler who stays close to him, while Katie Holmes plays Rachel Dawes, a childhood friend working in the justice system. Gary Oldman appears as the honest cop Jim Gordon, and Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow. Bruce begins to build a second identity, one designed to unsettle the criminals who prey on the city. The film follows how that identity is assembled, piece by piece, and what it asks of the man behind it.
