Biography

Early life

Katie Holmes was born on 18 December 1978 in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Toledo and took part in school musicals at a nearby high school, playing roles in Hello, Dolly! and Damn Yankees. She was accepted to Columbia University and attended a summer session there. At 14 she began classes at a modelling school in Toledo, which led to the International Modeling and Talent Association competition in New York in 1996. An agent signed her after she performed a monologue from To Kill a Mockingbird, and an audition tape was sent to the casting director of The Ice Storm.

Career

Holmes made her film debut in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997), playing Libbets Casey. She then won the part of Joey Potter on the television series Dawson's Creek, creator Kevin Williamson having cast her after she sent in an audition tape recorded at home. The show began in 1998 and she was the only actor to appear in all 128 episodes before it ended in 2003.

During the series she made her first leading film role in the thriller Disturbing Behavior (1998), for which she received an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. She appeared in Go and Teaching Mrs. Tingle in 1999, had a small uncredited part in Muppets from Space the same year, and in 2000 appeared in Wonder Boys and The Gift. She hosted Saturday Night Live in February 2001. Abandon (2002) gave her her first top-billed film role, and she was in Phone Booth the same year. In 2003 she played April in Pieces of April, for which she received a Satellite Award for Best Actress, and appeared in The Singing Detective.

In 2004 she starred in First Daughter. She played the assistant district attorney Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins (2005) and a reporter in Thank You for Smoking (2005). After the birth of her daughter in April 2006 she took a break from acting until 2008. She did not return as Rachel Dawes for the sequel, where Maggie Gyllenhaal took over the role. She starred in Mad Money (2008), and in October 2008 made her Broadway debut in a revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. She also appeared in an episode of Eli Stone that year.

Holmes played Jackie Kennedy in the miniseries The Kennedys (2011), returning to the role in The Kennedys: After Camelot, and took the part of Naomi, nicknamed "Slutty Pumpkin", in How I Met Your Mother. Her film work in the decade included Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and Jack and Jill (both 2011), The Son of No One (2011), The Romantics (2010), Woman in Gold (2015) and The Giver (2014). She appeared on Broadway in Dead Accounts in 2012 and in the third season of the Showtime series Ray Donovan in 2015.

She turned to directing with a short documentary for ESPN about the gymnast Nadia Comaneci in 2015 and her first feature, All We Had, which she also starred in, released in December 2016. In 2017 she appeared in Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky. She was in Dear Dictator and made a cameo in Ocean's 8 in 2018, and in Coda in 2019. In 2020 she starred in Brahms: The Boy II and in The Secret: Dare to Dream, in which she played Miranda Wells. She wrote and directed Alone Together, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in July 2022, and directed and acted in Rare Objects, released in April 2023. In 2023 she also appeared in the off-Broadway play The Wanderers, and in 2024 she played Mrs. Webb in a Broadway revival of Our Town.

Holmes received a Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Actress, Drama, in 1999 for Dawson's Creek, and a GLAAD Media Award in 2000. In 2011 she received a Crystal Award and the Max Mara Face of the Future Award. Across her career she has won four awards on record.
