Biography
Jain is the stage name of Jeanne Louise Galice, a French singer, songwriter and musician born on 7 February 1992 in Toulouse. She first reached a wide audience with the single "Come" in 2015 and has since released three albums, Zanaka, Souldier and The Fool. Her records combine pop with reggae, and she plays guitar.
Early life
Jain was born in Toulouse. Her mother is half French and half Malagasy, with the Malagasy side coming from her own father. She took up the guitar at sixteen; although she is left-handed, she learned to play it right-handed.
Her father worked for a French oil company, and the job moved the family abroad. At the age of nine she left France for Dubai, where she lived before spending four years in the Republic of Congo. She then spent a year in Abu Dhabi before returning to France. She has said that the time in Congo shaped her taste for danceable rhythms. Her musical education was assembled along the way: she learned drums in Pau, Arabic percussion in the Middle East and music programming in Congo. In 2010 she moved to Paris to attend a preparatory art school.
Career
Jain began writing demo tracks in Pointe-Noire, in the Republic of Congo, where she met a musician known as Mr. Flash who showed her how to program music. She put her demos on MySpace, and they were noticed by Dready, who became her manager over a long period. The musician Yodelice also heard them and invited her to Paris. He helped start her career and later became her producer. She chose her stage name from a saying associated with Jain philosophy, which advises not being sorry in defeat and not being proud in victory. In 2013 she toured as a supporting artist for Yodelice, and the two appeared together on the television programme Taratata, performing a duet version of "Redemption Song".
Her first EP, Hope, came out on 22 June 2015 with four songs. It included "Come", which did well in France and Spain; the single was certified Diamond in France in November 2016. The song later appeared on television in the American series Santa Clarita Diet and in the Amazon series Hanna, and a Polish broadcaster, Polsat, used it as a jingle. That summer she played the Solidays, BIG Festival and Bebop Festival events.
Her debut album, Zanaka, was released on 6 November 2015. The title is the Malagasy word for "child" and was chosen as a tribute to her mother. The album contained ten songs, among them "Come" and "Makeba", and the latter was used in a Levi's advertisement. Zanaka was certified gold in France in February 2016 for sales above 50,000 copies, and Diamond in December 2018 for sales above 500,000. It was released in the United Kingdom and the United States on 21 October 2016, and a deluxe edition followed on 25 November 2016. The music video for "Makeba", released on 30 November 2016, was nominated for Best Music Video at the 60th Grammy Awards in 2018. In 2017 she performed "Come" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, played "Makeba" on the British programme Later... with Jools Holland, and appeared at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.
Her second album, Souldier, was released on 24 August 2018, led by the single "Alright", which came out on 25 May 2018. The title is a play on the words "soldier" and "soul". The single reached number 6 in France and spent three weeks in the top ten there. The album itself debuted at the top of the French chart and sold more than 200,000 copies. The song "Star" addresses the position of young women in the music industry, while "Souldier" was inspired by the Orlando nightclub shooting and portrays a soldier looking for redemption. A further single, "Oh Man", followed in October 2018, with a video filmed at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.
In April 2019 she performed at Coachella and released "Gloria" on 19 April. On 7 June 2019 she sang "Gloria", "Makeba" and "Heads Up" at the opening ceremony of the FIFA Women's World Cup. Her third album, The Fool, was released on 21 April 2023. Her releases have appeared on RCA Records.
Recognition
In 2016 Jain was among the nominees for the Album Révélation category at the Victoires de la Musique for Zanaka. The following year she won the Victoires de la Musique award for female artist of the year, and in 2018 she received the NRJ Music Award for French-speaking female artist of the year. Her YouTube channel had about 1.4 million subscribers as of October 2025.
