Biography

Early life

Roberto Osuna Quintero Jr. was born on 7 February 1995 in Juan José Ríos, a town in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. He grew up in a farming family and left school as a child to work in the fields alongside his father, also named Roberto, who had himself pitched in the Mexican League for 22 seasons. After the working day ended, the elder Osuna coached his son in pitching. A relative on the same side of the family, his uncle Antonio Osuna, also reached the highest level of the sport and pitched in Major League Baseball for 11 seasons, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Osuna's baseball path started in the Mexican capital. He made his professional debut in 2011 with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League, appearing in 13 games that year. In August 2011 the Toronto Blue Jays acquired his contract for a reported fee of 1.5 million dollars, and the right-hander moved into the organization's minor-league system while still a teenager.

Career

Osuna spent the 2012 season with Bluefield in the Appalachian League and then with the Vancouver Canadians, where he struck out 13 batters over five innings in his first game, a franchise record at the time. He ended that season with a 2-0 record, a 2.27 earned run average and 49 strikeouts. In 2013 Major League Baseball placed him on its list of the top 100 prospects, and he was later ranked as the second-best prospect in the Blue Jays system. After a stretch of rehabilitation with Dunedin and the Gulf Coast League club, he arrived at spring training in 2015 as a non-roster invitee and won a place in the major-league bullpen.

He made his MLB debut on 8 April 2015 against the New York Yankees, at 20 years and 60 days old, the youngest pitcher ever to appear in a game for Toronto. Later that season he picked up his first save, and in the American League Division Series he recorded a five-out save in the deciding fifth game, becoming the youngest pitcher in American League history to save a postseason game. He finished the 2015 regular season with 20 saves and a 2.58 earned run average, and placed fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Osuna became Toronto's closer in 2016. He saved the season opener that year and went on to record 36 saves, and in September 2016 he became the youngest pitcher in MLB history to reach 50 career saves. In 2017 he collected 39 saves, was selected for the American League roster at the All-Star Game, and became the first pitcher in Blue Jays history with consecutive seasons of at least 35 saves. He also pitched for Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. On 10 April 2018 he earned his 100th career save, the youngest pitcher to reach that total.

Later in 2018 Major League Baseball suspended him for 75 games under its domestic violence policy. On 30 July 2018 Toronto traded him to the Houston Astros in exchange for pitchers Ken Giles, Héctor Pérez and David Paulino, and the Astros reinstated him in early August. In 2019 he led the American League with 38 saves and 56 games finished, with a 2.63 earned run average, and the Astros reached the World Series that autumn. After a shortened 2020 season in which he appeared in only four games, Houston placed him on waivers on 29 October 2020 and he became a free agent.

Osuna returned to the Diablos Rojos del México in May 2021 and finished that season with a 3-0 record, a 1.09 earned run average and 12 saves. He was placed on the reserve list on 31 May 2022 to pursue an opportunity in Asia, and on 9 June 2022 he signed with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball. In 29 games that year he posted a 0.91 earned run average with 10 saves.

On 8 December 2022 he joined the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. In 2023 he appeared in 49 games, finishing with 26 saves and a 0.92 earned run average, and in November of that year he agreed to a four-year contract extension worth 26.4 million dollars. He recorded 24 saves in 2024 and added eight more in 26 appearances in 2025, a season in which the Hawks won the Japan Series.

Personal life

Osuna's father and uncle both played professional baseball, and the family connection to the sport runs through his early training. The records list Houston, Toronto, the Marines, the Hawks and the Mexico City club among the teams he has played for, all in the role of pitcher.
