Biography

Early life

Jonathan Torrens was born in 1972 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He spent part of his childhood in Sherwood, where he went to elementary school and made his first stage appearance in Grade 1. After beginning high school at Colonel Gray High School in Charlottetown, he moved with his family to Halifax in 1983. In Halifax he attended St. Patrick's High School, and Queen Elizabeth High School is also listed among his schools.

Career

Torrens began his television career as a teenager. From 1989 until 1996 he co-hosted Street Cents, a consumer-affairs series for young viewers on CBC Television. He then moved on to Jonovision, a teen talk show that he hosted, wrote for and co-produced from 1996 until 2001. In 1999 an episode of the programme reunited the original cast of Degrassi, an episode later regarded as having helped lead to the revival of that franchise. He later appeared in Degrassi: The Next Generation in 2003, in a two-part story as Shane McKay.

Acting parts ran alongside his hosting work. In 1998 he played David in the film Beefcake, which dealt with 1950s muscle magazines and their connection to the gay community. In 2001 he joined the cast of Trailer Park Boys as J-Roc, a role he held for many years and one that remains his best-known credit. He appeared in the series' feature films, returned for the show's streaming-era seasons from 2014, and co-wrote the ninth and tenth seasons. He left the cast in April 2016.

Other work in the 2000s included the CBC mini-series Jonathan Crosses Canada (2003), in which he travelled the country in a motorhome, and a 2004 appearance on the American reality-style series Joe Schmo 2. In 2008 he appeared in Treevenge, a short film directed by Jason Eisener, and in 2009 he began hosting TV with TV's Jonathan Torrens on the TVtropolis network, which ran until 2011. In 2010 he became one of the hosts of Wipeout Canada. He also worked on the film Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day (2009) and took regular roles in series including Mr. D, Call Me Fitz, Game On and Letterkenny.

Torrens has written for the page as well as the screen. In 2014 he and the drummer Jeremy Taggart began a podcast together, and in October 2017 they published a book of road stories and everyday anecdotes titled Canadianity. In 2019 he launched a financial-education web series, Your Two Cents.

In 2021 he wrote, directed and starred in Vollies, a sitcom about volunteer firefighters that debuted on 20 October 2021 on the Bell Fibe on-demand service. In 2022 he began a recurring role as Remy Nadeau on Shoresy and played the father of the main characters in the film Kids vs. Aliens, his most recent listed film credit. A further film role, as Steve in the comedy The Snake, was reported for 2026. His credits are listed as five films and five television series between 1989 and 2022.

Recognition

Torrens won a Gemini Award in 1998 in the category of Best Short Dramatic Program for his work on Nan's Taxi. For Vollies he received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the tenth Canadian Screen Awards, held in 2022.

Public roles

Beyond entertainment programming, Torrens has taken on hosting and narration work for public-information projects. In 1999 he hosted and narrated a 33-minute docudrama titled When Choices Collide, produced for the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission, which looked at the consequences of impaired driving. He was also a guest host of several episodes of the CBC radio programme Definitely Not the Opera in late 2008.
