Early life

Colin Ferguson was born on 22 July 1972 in Montreal, Quebec, and grew up in the city. He attended Appleby College and later McGill University. Having been raised around Montreal, he speaks both French and English. Before turning to screen work, he performed with On the Spot, an improvisational comedy group in Montreal.

Career

Ferguson's early screen work includes the 1993 miniseries More Tales of the City, in which he played Burke Andrew. His first film credit in the listings used here is The Opposite of Sex (1998). In the early 2000s he appeared in CSI: Miami and Line of Fire, and in 2003 he starred in the short-lived television show Coupling.

His best-known role is Sheriff Jack Carter, the lead of the Syfy series Eureka, which was broadcast from 2006 to 2012. In its later seasons he also worked as a producer on the show. Around the same time he took parts in films such as Because I Said So (2007), and in 2007 he starred as Dan Casey in the Lifetime holiday film Christmas in Paradise, opposite Charlotte Ross. In 2010 he played Nathan Bickerman in the Syfy film Lake Placid 3, co-starring Kirsty Mitchell. The same year he directed the film Triassic Attack, which is his one listed credit as a director. Outside acting he has also been a guest presenter on the science fiction news programme HypaSpace, and in September 2011 he appeared on the podcast Disasterpiece Theatre to talk about what Eureka might have looked like if Michael Bay had directed it.

After Eureka ended, Ferguson appeared in The Vampire Diaries and had a recurring role on the series Haven in 2013 and 2014. In January 2014 he became the newest actor to play the "Maytag Repairman" in a multimedia advertising campaign for Maytag appliances. He joined the Hallmark Channel series Cedar Cove in July 2015, in a recurring role in the third season as the new district attorney and a rival to the character Jack.

A series of television films followed. In 2016 he starred as Jack Brewster in Every Christmas Has a Story, with Lori Loughlin. In 2017 he took the role of Mackintyre Sullivan in the Fixer Upper Mysteries films opposite Jewel, and the series includes Concrete Evidence, Framed for Murder and Deadly Deed. He also appeared in Christmas on Honeysuckle Lane in 2018. His most recent screen credit on record is the series The Summer I Turned Pretty, from 2022. In all, 18 credits are listed for him, from 1998 to 2022, across films and television series.

Personal life

Ferguson has a son, born in 2013, whom he raises with his partner Lindsay Thompson. He supports the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team and contributes to NHL.com as a celebrity blogger.
