Biography

Early life

María Pilar León Cebrián, known as Mapi León, is a Spanish footballer who plays as a defender. She was born on 13 June 1995 in Zaragoza and grew up in the La Almozara district with an older brother. As a child she tried several sports. She began with volleyball at the age of seven, also played baseball, and then took up futsal with the local team Gran Vía, where she was a winger. She was offered a scholarship to an art school but declined it to concentrate on football.

A former sporting director of Zaragoza CFF, David Magaña, noticed her and her brother kicking a ball while shopping at a supermarket, and she started training with the club at age 11.

Career

León spent two years in the youth side of Zaragoza before making her top-flight debut for Prainsa Zaragoza at 16, in a match against Barcelona. In 2013 the club reached the final of the Copa de la Reina, where it lost 4-0 to Barcelona, and it was her last match for the team. The same year she was named in the Golden 11 of Futbol Draft, a distinction she received two more times.

She joined RCD Espanyol in 2013 and stayed one season, winning the first trophy of her career, the Copa Catalunya. In 2014 she moved to Atlético Madrid, who finished second in the league behind Barcelona in her first season, and that finish took both club and player into the UEFA Women's Champions League. Under the coach Ángel Villacampa, a former left-back, she changed position from left-back to centre-back. In the 2016-17 season she won her first league title with the club and was chosen for the league's best XI of the season.

In August 2017 she signed for Barcelona. The fee was 50,000 euros, which made her the first paid transfer in the history of Spanish women's football. Her first title with the club was the 2018 Copa de la Reina, in which she played the full match against her former team. In October 2018 she scored her first Champions League goal, against Glasgow City, and in 2019 she started her first Champions League final, a 4-1 defeat by Lyon. She then extended her contract to 2022.

On 6 January 2021 she started the first competitive match played by Barcelona's women's team at Camp Nou. That year she was part of the team that won the Champions League for the first time, winning the final 4-0, and the club went on to complete a continental treble for the first time with that year's Copa de la Reina. She was named in the Champions League Squad of the Season for 2020-21. She started the 2022 final, lost 3-1 to Lyon, and on 3 June 2023 she played the whole match as Barcelona beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 to win the competition again. In November 2022 she scored in her 200th appearance for Barcelona, an 8-0 league win over Alavés.

In May 2026 it was announced that she would leave Barcelona after nine seasons. On 13 July 2026 she signed a three-year contract with London City Lionesses of the Women's Super League.

Public roles

León made her debut for the Spain national team on 15 September 2016, coming on as a substitute in a 13-0 qualifying win over Montenegro. She played at UEFA Euro 2017, at the 2019 FIFA World Cup, where Spain lost to the United States in the round of 16, and at UEFA Euro 2022. She captained Spain for the first time at the 2019 Algarve Cup and scored her first international goal in 2021 against Poland, wearing her mother's maiden name, Cebrián, on her shirt for the match.

In September 2022 she was one of 15 players who declined national team call-ups after a dispute with the then coach, Jorge Vilda. The group, called Las 15 in the Spanish media, issued a joint statement and criticised the federation. León kept refusing selection into 2023. In October 2025 she was called back by the new manager Sonia Bermúdez for the Nations League Finals.

Personal life

In 2018 León spoke publicly in an interview with the newspaper El Mundo about being a lesbian, and in 2019 she was a main speaker at the start of Madrid Pride. She took part in a Levi's campaign for Pride month in 2021. Away from football she likes motorbikes, a passion that comes from her father, and she draws and paints. She has several tattoos and, in 2021, was an intern at a tattoo shop.
