Early life

Andrea Berg, born Andrea Zellen, was born on 28 January 1966 in Krefeld, Germany. As a child she tried out short performances at carnivals and other local celebrations. She later sang with a band, and her duties there also covered stage set-up and driving the group's van. To support herself in those years she worked as a nurse in the intensive care and oncology departments of a hospital.

Career

Berg's recording career began in 1992, when the producer Eugen Römer heard a cassette of her singing. He liked her voice, and within a week the first tracks for her debut album, Du bist frei, had been recorded. Its singles included "Kilimandscharo". Römer also produced her second album, Gefühle, released in 1995, which became her commercial breakthrough. In 1994 she had reached first place on the ZDF-Hitparade with "Steig wieder auf", recorded as part of the group Alle für Alle.

She continued with Träume lügen nicht (1997) and Zwischen tausend Gefühlen (1998), and in 1999 released Weil ich verliebt bin, whose single "Vielleicht ein Traum zu viel" reached third place on the ZDF-Hitparade. Since 18 October 2000 her name has been a registered trademark in Germany. The compilation Best Of, issued in October 2001, sold two million copies, and it is the album that has spent the longest time on the German and Austrian album charts. Wo liegt das Paradies followed in 2001 and Nah am Feuer in 2002. Machtlos (2003), Du (2004) and Splitternackt (2006) came next, and Splitternackt reached number one in Germany. Her releases of the later 2000s include Dezember Nacht (2007) and Zwischen Himmel & Erde (2009).

In 2010 Berg began working with the producer Dieter Bohlen, which ended her seventeen-year collaboration with Römer. Their first album, Schwerelos (2010), reached the top of the German and Austrian charts, as did Abenteuer in 2011. She marked twenty years in the business with a tour from January to March 2012, and in April 2013 she was a guest juror on an episode of Deutschland sucht den Superstar. Atlantis (2013) topped the German, Austrian and Swiss charts, and a live recording, Atlantis - Andrea Berg Live das Heimspiel, appeared in 2014. Seelenbeben (2016) was her fourth album with Bohlen and also reached number one in the three countries. She issued the compilation 25 Jahre Abenteuer Leben in 2017. Bohlen ended their professional relationship in March 2018, but the two announced in April 2019 that they would release two new songs together. Her album Mosaik appeared in 2019. In total, the listed discography under her name runs from Du bist frei in 1992 to Mosaik in 2019.

Her music is classed as schlager. More than ten million records have been sold over her career, and she is regarded as one of the best-selling artists in Germany.

Recognition

Berg received the Goldene Stimmgabel in every year from 2002 to 2007. She won the Osgar in 2008 and the Echo Pop award for best live act in 2015. On 3 November 2008 the President of Germany, Horst Köhler, presented her with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at Bellevue Palace, in recognition of her work for hospices. In June 2009 her birth city of Krefeld awarded her its seal for social commitment. In 2018 she received the Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia. Ten award wins are listed for her in total.

Personal life

Berg is married to Ulrich Ferber, a sports agent and hotelier who co-founded the football club SG Sonnenhof Großaspach. They married in 2007. She has one child, a daughter born in 1998. Earlier, from 2002 to 2004, she was married to the schlager singer Olaf Henning.
