Biography

Early life

Stephan Bodzin was born on 4 August 1969 in Bremen, which at the time was part of West Germany. His father was an experimental musician, and Bodzin himself received a classical musical education before he moved toward electronic production. His first real success came from a quieter corner of the industry: he wrote music for theatres across Europe, and that commissioned work gave his compositions their earliest audience.

Career

Bodzin works as a DJ, a producer of techno and trance, and a live performer, and he also runs a record label. His catalogue is usually filed under minimal techno. The first wave of his twelve-inch singles arrived in 2005 and 2006, and they were spread over several imprints. Systematic Recordings issued "Caligula / Marathon Man" in December 2005 and "Tron / Midnight Express" in August 2006. Other early releases came through Spielzeug Schallplatten, Datapunk, Gigolo Records and Giant Wheel, and a number of collaborative records appeared on Get Physical Music.

Partnerships shaped much of this period. Working with the producer Marc Romboy, he released a string of singles credited as Stephan Bodzin vs Marc Romboy, beginning with "Luna / Miranda" in November 2005 and continuing through "Ariel / Mab" in October 2007. With Oliver Huntemann he recorded as Bodzin & Huntemann, whose "Black EP" came out on Gigolo Records in January 2006, followed by "Black Sun" on Datapunk that April. The same two musicians also made records as H-Man for Giant Wheel and ran the Rekorder series, a run of eleven numbered releases that stretched from September 2005 to March 2008. A third circle of collaborators included Thomas Schumacher and Caitlin Devlin, with whom he released as Elektrochemie, and Schumacher alone, with whom he made the album Home in 2006.

His remix work gave him exposure outside the club scene. He reworked tracks for Depeche Mode, Booka Shade and The Knife.

In 2006 Bodzin founded his own label, Herzblut, the German word for "heart's blood". Its early output included "Kerosene / Cucuma" in September 2006 and "Valentine / Papillon" a month later. The label then carried his first full-length record, Liebe Ist..., which was released in May 2007 after a single of the same name the previous month. A further single, "Bremen Ost / Station 72", followed in March 2008.

After that first album there was a long gap before his next full-length release. His second album, Powers of Ten, appeared in 2015 on Herzblut, and the single "Strand" followed in 2017. His third album, Boavista, was released in 2021.

Bodzin describes himself as a "melody man", a phrase that fits the emphasis on tunes in his productions. The DJ Hell once called his sound the "Bremen sound", tying it to his home city. His audience online is sizeable: by February 2025 his YouTube channel counted about 105,000 subscribers, and in October 2026 his Instagram account had more than 428,000 followers.
